Corona Chronicles: 06/21/2022

I need to catch my breath. It’s been a crazy day in the Radford household.

I’m going to start with my own story today. I got to work on time, for once. I could barely celebrate that fact because as I was walking in the fire alarm was going off. It would ring for a minute and then stop. A few minutes later it would start again. The security guards didn’t seem alarmed. Apparently, last night’s storms had knocked out some power downtown and they were trying to get everything up and running again. I didn’t realize the severity of the issue until about 20 minutes later, when I realized I hadn’t cooled off, yet. The air conditioning was not running. We are required to wear masks in the building. After three hours of that, I started checking around with my co-workers to see if I was the only one. After 5 hours, I mentioned to management that it was a health hazard. In response, they brought me a fan. Finally, after 6.5 hours, they asked me if I wanted to go home. She barely had the words out of her mouth before I started packing my things.

I got home just in time to save the day for one of the kids. Camp went well for them, from what I can tell. I didn’t know that they were taking head shots today. Had I known, I would have combed the big kid’s hair, and made them both put on decent clothes. Because I didn’t know, they both took head shots looking crazy. Her hair was half-straight, half-afro. The boy gave us a smirk instead of a smile.

Finally, I took the baby to her gymnastic class. She had a great time. She was very proud of herself for jumping from the platform to practice the high bar. I’m not going to lie. It was actually pretty impressive.

I made cabbage and sausage for dinner with a side of cornbread. Nobody was pleased except for me. They ate it, though, because there were no other options.

Today, I got some news that I had been waiting to hear. I’m hoping to get more good news over the next couple of days, and then, just maybe I can breathe a little bit. I’m getting tired of holding my breath.

We are almost there. The weekend is just around the corner. I’m ready to sleep in for an extra hour. I’m actually ready to go to sleep now.

Last night, the boy and I fell asleep listening to our book. So we re-listened to it after school today. When I asked him where they were at in class, he couldn’t answer. He is not at all interested in this book. I’m doing my best to try to keep him focused, but I don’t actually love the book either. He was telling me about an upcoming dance, and I felt bad because neither of the dates he gave me will work because of his sisters’ schedules. I’m trying to find him a summer camp or something, but the two I think that would interest him most are WAY outside of my price range. One camp wanted $1000.00 for a week! The other wanted $400.00 per week. At this rate, I better come up with a camp curriculum, because we are all about to be looking at each other this summer.

I signed the baby up for a summer gymnastics class. The girl drops into the splits at the drop of a hat, and she’s incredibly strong. I’m hoping that this class will burn some of her energy, and take her focus off of Youtube for a little while. I really don’t like any of the things she watches. At least she will have something to do for one hour a week this summer.

The big kid stayed after school to play Dungeons and Dragons with her friends. She was very excited because her character in today’s campaign was a big blond beefcake with a low IQ. So basically, her character was her exact opposite. She had a great time in her alternate universe.

In my alternate universe, I’m the same chick. I would just get 8 hours of sleep, and I never have to worry about money. Oh, and my joints wouldn’t ache or pop.

Have a good night.

I remember singing along with Lionel Richie, “Easy like Sunday mornings.” I wish Sunday mornings were still easy. Even though I’m not trying to rush to get everybody to church on time, I still have a little anxiety about Sundays. It’s the last day to get anything done before the hub-bub of the week begins.

My husband decided to barbecue today. Yes, we are aware that unofficial summer barbecue season started last weekend which was a holiday. But we had a ton of hot dogs in the freezer we needed to cook, and hubby felt like firing up the grill, so we did. I made both potato and pasta salad, so I’m carb-loading all week, because no one else in my house eats either. But they both turned out delicious, so I know what I’m eating for lunch every day. Any way, the baby was the only one awake when my husband started cooking, so she decided to be his helper. I’m not sure how much help she actually was, but she had a ball.

My son wasn’t feeling too well, but he’s back to his normal self now. He actually invited me to play a game with him. I had trouble keeping up, and I wasn’t really sure how to control my characters, but he let me win the first match, so I would have some confidence. Then he proceeded to kick my tail many, many times in a row, until he got bored, and decided he’d let me play on his team. He says we won, but I’m not even sure about that.

I took the big kid to pick up her materials for science camp today. I’m not sure if she’s more excited about the material she’s studying or the fact that virtual camp doesn’t start until 1:00pm. Either way, she is quite pleased. She managed to finagle her way into our adult conversation today, and boy did she get an earful. Hubby and I watched an episode of OWN’s Black Love docuseries and that almost always leads to conversation. Today’s topic was finances, and after I discovered that one of the husband’s in the episode spent hundreds of thousands of dollars at a strip club on more than one occasion, I was livid! My poor husband felt like he was in trouble for something he didn’t even do. The kid threw in her two cents every now and again, and we decided to let her in on some topics of conversation she is usually not allowed her to hear. She’ll have fascinating stories someday if she ever decides to write a book.

Over all, we had a pretty good day, and I am hoping for good night’s rest.

Good night.
